Redacting Microsoft Teams chats from a PST export

Import and redact Microsoft Teams chat messages exported to PST.

RedactBox can now redact Microsoft Teams chat messages, not just email. If you export Teams (and Skype) conversations to a PST, RedactBox pulls the messages in and lets you redact them the same way you redact emails.

How Teams chats appear

Teams messages don't have a subject line or a single sender and recipient like email, so we group them into conversation transcripts — one document per chat, with the messages in date order. Each transcript is tagged Teams Chat, so you can spot them at a glance and use the Tag filter to show just your Teams content. You redact a transcript exactly like an email: select text, apply redactions, export.

Exporting Teams chats to PST

Teams chats are exported from Microsoft 365, usually via Microsoft Purview:

  1. In the Microsoft Purview portal, run a Content search scoped to the relevant user(s) and their Teams data.

  2. Export the results and choose the PST format.

  3. Upload the .pst to RedactBox as normal.

(Your IT or compliance team will usually run this if you don't have Purview access.)

What's supported

  • Teams chat messages — one-to-one and group chats — grouped into per-participant transcripts.

  • PSTs containing both email and Teams data: you'll see your emails and Teams transcripts together in the same project.

Not yet supported

  • Attachments and images shared inside a Teams message — the message text is redactable, but files sent in a chat aren't imported yet.

  • Teams meetings / calendar entries aren't brought in as redactable items.

Nothing showing up?

If a PST imports but shows nothing to redact, it usually means it only contained Teams meetings or other non-message items. If you're expecting chat content and don't see it, get in touch and we'll take a look.
