How referrals and commission work

When a client counts as yours, when you are paid, and what happens with team plans, refunds and disputes.

Last updated About 20 hours ago

This article explains exactly when a client counts as yours, when you are paid, and what happens with refunds and team plans. The short version: share your link or code, and anyone who buys through it is linked to you automatically.

How a client is linked to you

  • Your link. When someone opens your referral link, RedactBox remembers it in their browser for 90 days. If they buy in that time, they are linked to you.

  • Your code. On the checkout page there is a box labelled Referred by a partner? Their code. If a client types your code there, they are linked to you, whichever way they found us.

  • More than one partner. If a client follows more than one partner's link, the most recent one before they buy gets the credit.

Once a client has paid, they are yours. Clicking another partner's link later doesn't change that.

The link is remembered in the browser it was opened in. If a client clicks your link on their phone and buys later on their work computer, ask them to enter your code at checkout so the referral isn't missed.

What your client sees

From the moment they arrive through your link, your logo appears above the pricing and team pages as Partnered with. After they buy, their account and team pages show Provided by with your logo. You choose the logo in your partner area.

Team plans

A client buying licences for their whole organisation counts the same as one buying a single licence. If a client starts on a single Professional licence and moves up to a team plan later, they stay yours. Your agreed commission period keeps running from their first payment rather than starting again.

When you are paid

  1. Each time a client you referred pays an invoice, your commission on it is worked out automatically. It is based on what they paid before VAT.

  2. It is sent to your Stripe account once their payment has cleared. Until then it shows as On its way in your partner area.

  3. Stripe pays your balance into your bank account once a month, at the start of the month.

Commission is paid for the period agreed with you when you joined. Your welcome email has your terms.

Refunds and chargebacks

  • A refund takes back the commission on that payment automatically, in proportion to the amount refunded. You never have to pay anything back by hand.

  • A disputed payment holds its commission until the dispute is settled. If the client wins it, the commission is taken back. If we win, it is paid as normal.

Who doesn't count

  • You and your colleagues. Anyone signing up with your contact email, or an email on your own organisation's domain, never earns you commission.

  • While you are paused. If your partnership is paused, your link credits no one and payments made meanwhile earn nothing. Commission you had already earned but not yet been sent is held, and nothing already paid is taken back.

Example: a training provider

  1. You run a subject access request course for school data protection leads and add your RedactBox link to the course handout.

  2. A business manager at one school clicks it the following week. The pricing page shows "Partnered with" and your logo.

  3. A month later they buy licences for their team. They are within 90 days, so they are linked to you, and they appear in your partner area as their school's web address.

  4. Every month they pay, your commission appears under On its way, then reaches your bank at the start of the following month.
